Sons Corner - November 2024
Happy Veterans Day and a Happy Thanksgiving to our Legion Post 574 Family. How time flies, here we are starting the Holiday season. Is everyone ready? I’m barely over Halloween and here comes two of my favorite days, one that is a food feast and the other a celebration of how we are still a free Nation. And also an Election Day!! I hope everybody was able to vote on November 5th, the veterans we celebrate are the reason we can vote, always remember.
November 10th is the Veterans Day Breakfast, the Legion Family Breakfast Committee invites our veterans for “on the house breakfast”, our little way of saying thank you for your service. We will be serving from 8 to 11 AM.
Monday, November 11th is the official day of remembering our Veterans. We honor all those who sacrificed themselves, time with family, friends, some who did not come home, our POW/MIA’s, all for us to be free as citizens of the United States. We owe them everything, for the month of November, let us all remember and recognize the men and women of our military who protected us from the tyranny of evil.
Thank you to the Squadron Kitchen Committee for a fantastic Early Bird dinner on October 19, awesome meal. Congratulations to Thomas Cumm, his name was drawn to have his 2026 dues paid. Squadron 574 membership is doing absolutely fantastic, with 198 members, at 87% paid. I can’t say it enough, GREAT JOB to all in getting their dues in so promptly. A big Thank You to 1st Vice John Santacroce and Adjutant Big Dan Nolin in collecting dues. Any Squadron member can recruit new members, either for the Sons, or Legionnaires. Know someone? Recruit that someone.
It’s that time of year to remember the “Buddy Check”. Holidays can be hard for some, all it takes is 60 seconds to make a call or send a text to see if anyone needs a hand or an ear. Some of our members may be homebound, don’t hesitate to help out with simple chores or just a visit for coffee and conversation, it can make a big difference to that individual.
The Squadron chose once again to help with the Adopt-A-Family program though the LEAP Program at Washington County Headstart. Members voted to adopt up to 5 families to help make their Christmas a little happier. Thank you the guys for another year of community spirit.
October 26th was the Legion Family “Nightmare on Pearl St” Halloween Family Day. Thank you to all the volunteers helping out with food, decorations, pumpkin painting and “Trick or Treating”, and to the community for supporting us. This was a free event for all to enjoy, and we did.
I know we have a lot of members who have not stopped in to see what’s been going, well guess what, there’s a lot going on: Bingo on Fridays, dice game in Lounge ($1 for 3 rolls). How about the Queen of Hearts? Tickets $1 each with the drawing on Thursdays between 6:30 and 7:00 PM. Stop in and check it out. You will run into some great people you may not have seen in a while, almost guarantee it.
While you enjoy Thanksgiving with family, friends or volunteering to serve others, what are you thankful for? (the food is a bonus). For me, I am thankful for my wife and family, the extended family I have in the American Legion Family, for the Veterans, Active Military, 1st Responders, those who sacrifice for us to enjoy life as we know it as free Americans. God bless to all and the United States of America.
Sincerely - Dan Lancette, SAL Squadron 574 Commander
