Auxiliary Corner - April 2026
Greetings Everyone!
The weather continues to get nicer, and our Auxiliary continues to get busier!
Our birthday dinner on March 21st was a great success. During the event, we proudly announced the establishment of The Kathleen Hayward Memorial Scholarship. This award will be given to a young woman entering the military, honoring the 62 years of resilience, compassion, and patriotism Kathy modeled for us all. It is our distinct honor to remember her by helping the next generation of female service members pave their own way.

Greeting Squadron and Legion Post 574 Family!
Spring is almost here. Let’s recap what happened in March. We had lots of stuff going on. First want to say thank you to our kitchen crew for your hard work with the two big dinners we had this past month. The Saint Patrick’s Day Weekend dinner and the Birthday Dinner the following weekend.
Let’s talk about the birthday dinner. What a huge turnout we had for the birthday dinner. Thank you to everyone that helped put this birthday dinner on to make it such a successful day. As always, each year, Sons do a variety of different awards like Years of Membership, certificates of appreciation, Son of the Year award and Commander Choice Award.

Hello Everyone! March is officially here, and with it, hopes of an early spring! It is a busy season of growth for our Auxiliary, both in our membership numbers and our community impact. As we transition from the winter thaw, we have plenty to celebrate and even more to look forward to.
February Rewind: Love & Laughter
The Valentine’s Day Dinner was a wonderful success! A huge thank you goes out to Big Dan and his kitchen crew for the incredible prime rib dinner—it was truly delicious. It was wonderful to see everyone enjoying some much-needed downtime, dancing the night away, and catching up with friends. Also, a special shout-out to Jenna for keeping the spirits high with those yummy mimosas! As of this writing, we are gearing up for our Paint & Sip this Saturday, February 28th. We can’t wait to see the masterpieces our members create!

Lynn Mac Rae Goodness 11/16/1943 - 12/12/2026
Lynn Mac Rae Goodness, born November 16, 1943, passed away surrounded by the love of his family. Known to many as ‘Goody,’ Lynn will be remembered for his quick wit, steady presence, and the kind of humor that could cut through any tough moment usually followed by one of his famous ‘Goodyisms’ that left everyone laughing (and occasionally shaking their heads).
Lynn grew up in Lake George, New York, a place that always stayed close to his heart. Later, he moved to Saratoga Springs, where he built a life and raised his family with his beloved wife, Lynda, who passed away in 2019. Together they created a home full of love, laughter, and the kind of everyday support that family never forgets.
Daniel Goldin 02/05/1926 - 02/10/2026

Born on February 5, 1926, to Samuel and Bessie Godin, Daniel lived a remarkable century defined by service, hard work, devotion to family, and deep community roots.

Happy New Year Everyone!
I hope everyone was safe during the storm! 2025 is behind us and it was quite eventful! Members of the Auxiliary did an outstanding job with all of our programs and events throughout the year. I appreciate everyone’s hard work. From our basket raffles, the Walkathon, the amazing turnout for the Wall, Dine to Donate, our Veterans Day dinner, Sharon’s wonderful work with Her in Hero and all the other events that you all contributed to, ending with another incredible breakfast with Santa, it was a job well done and I thank you all! This year we held a special session after breakfast with Santa. For the first time, we hosted a small session for our children that have a hard time navigating the chaos of so many people. We had around a dozen children come and they had a wonderful time. Parents were very appreciative to have a special place for their children to be able to see Santa. Several have asked that we do it again next year.

Hope everyone has a great holiday and a happy new year with your friends and family.
Thank you to everyone that helped make the December Breakfast with Santa a success. We gave out over 300 meals that day. Thank you to Post 574 Auxiliary for the amazing job with the decorations and activities for the kids. Lastly, thank you to Big Dan for being Santa.
Riders Corner - February 2026
We have been very busy here at the Legion over the last 2 months. We attended the wake for a member, Kathy Hayward and we met up with Dave Lippa for breakfast before heading over to Granville.
We also had members at midwinter conference in Albany. When we arrived on Friday we went to the Fisher House and presented them with a check for $1000.00 Our Assistant Director was there as was his wife Michelle and he will have a report at our meeting.
The Song Re-Maines The Same
On February 15, 1898 the USS Maine mysteriously exploded in Havana Harbor, Cuba. At the time American news media widely attributed the cause to sabotage by Spain. Subsequent investigations suggested an internal ammunition or coal bunker detonation. As is so often the case, the truth was less important than the interlocking interests of media, politicians and industry.
In the years preceding the explosion, Cuba had been engaged in a bloody revolution against the Spanish occupation. News of the revolution and brutal Spanish counter-measures had reached around the globe and put US politicians under intense pressure to intervene. As an occupying foreign power in the Western Hemisphere, Spain was already violating the Monroe Doctrine and therefore its occupation of Cuba was a problem with or without slavery and concentration camps. The fact that this foreign power was a mere 90 miles from the continental US and in control of 90% of the world’s sugar exports was additional incentive.
